Buzzed

Premiered at PF | May 2018

Buzzed is a whimsical, funky, colorful film and photo series that re-envisions the black barbershop for queer black people. Michael Jemison wrote this film after years of navigating a very toxic hyper-masculine space. Going to get a haircut for a black man isn’t as simple as going to Great Clips or Supercuts. These Barbers/Hairstylist don't know how to cut black hair. Black people have created the black barbershop to get the haircuts that they envision. A haircut for black men can be a restorative experience. Known for building community, the barbershop is a setting where black men feel they can truly be seen. However, this is not the case for black queer men. Black queer men have to hide their identities in order to occupy a straight man’s space. In this film we get to dream of a new world!

THE FILM:

A piece of art that deftly blends reality and fantasy, color and light: the reality of what it’s like to be a queer Black person occupying a space traditionally reserved for (or dominated by) straight men; the fantasy of a world in which queer Black people dare to envision the barbershop of their dreams, complete with color, fierce movement, and royalty, best embodied in Buzzed by Andrea Jenkins, the transgender activist and Minneapolis city councilwoman who made history last year as the nation’s first openly Black trans woman elected for public office.
