In 2021 Open Screen started out with a small group of artists who were facing the isolation of the pandemic, motivated by a desire to reconnect with community, wanting to share their art off of phones and in person. Like an open mic, with musicians getting on stage to share a song, Open Screen created a similar space for filmmakers, who brought a flash drive, a film and a story. Today Open Screen has grown to host a 3 week event, The Forum, kicking off with an Open Screen for photographers and filmmakers.
Open Screen: The Forum invites filmmakers and photographers from Minnesota to submit their work to be shown on the big screen at the opening night event. Each artist will be able to present either a photography series or a short film (narrative, documentary, or experimental) , speak on their process, and have a Q&A with the audience. Each artist will have up to 15 minutes total for their film and audience talk back. Open Screen Forum Organizers Drew Arrieta and Ryan Stopera will be curating submissions into a program, including scheduling a run of the show.
