About Open Screen:
Open Screen is a community-centered film platform that transforms how moving images are shared, experienced, and celebrated in Minneapolis. Held at Public Functionary since 2021 as an intimate gathering where artists brought flash drives to share works-in-progress, Open Screen has evolved into a vital cultural space that maintains its open access. Open Screen addresses critical gaps in the film ecosystem by creating a welcoming environment where BIPOC creators are centered and supported in sharing their work. Open Screen has become a trusted "third space” where artists can arrive individually — but leave part of a community — one that invites collaboration, and offers reciprocal energy.
About Cinefilmu:
Cinefilmu, a film festival presented by Mamá Papaya and TDM5, welcomes visionary QTBIPOC filmmakers and storytellers to a community focused celebration of the stories and cultures of Mni Sota Makoce film. The festival showcases the powerful and brilliant cultural stories from immigrants, Black, Indigenous, Hmong, Somali, Latine, and the many peoples in our neighborhoods. The festival’s name itself— combining “cine” (Spanish word for “film”) and “filmu” (Yoruba pronunciation for “film”) reflects our commitment to cross-cultural creativity and collaboration. Cinefilmu showcases immersive installations by YAYASAGA and film screenings that celebrate our vibrant spectrums and histories of migrations, ancestral practices, and colorful tapestries of cultural visions.Cinefilmu 2025 is slated for November and welcomes an ever expansive program now inviting national and international shorts and features.
