Wasima Farah is a Somali multidisciplinary artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Brooklyn, New York. Her creative practice is anchored in themes of memory, identity, womanhood, family relationships, and the complexities of eldest daughters in paintings, experimental films, and design.
Her work often uses vivid primary colors and simplified figures to connect personal memory to collective experience. Her use of color became an emotional and narrative tool within her practice, while pattern and textile reference Somali motifs. Her figures often exist without defined facial features, allowing gesture, color, clothing, and composition to communicate emotion and create space for viewers to recognize their own experiences within the work.
Across her practice, she uses color, movement, sound, and symbolism to examine the ways culture, family, and memory shape our understanding of ourselves and one another. Through these elements, she creates intimate stories centered on the Black and Somali womanhood experience. She is a graphic designer at Soomaal House of Art, creative director at The Digital Sisterhood, museum program coordinator, and arts educator dedicated to creating space for Somali art.
Her work has been showcased at BlackStar Film Festival, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Midway Contemporary Art, Public Functionary, Soomaal House of Art, Augsburg University, Nuit Blanche, East Lake Street Target, and more.
