PREVIEW - IN OTHER MILES (PF EXHIBITION)

CURATED BY CAMERON PATRICIA DOWNEY

OCT 14 - NOV 4 | PF MAIN GALLERY 144

Public Functionary’s PF Studios program supports emerging artists with affordable studio space, mentorship, workshops, and a community of practice. The program aimed to open access to the Northrup King Building, which has historically been inaccessible to artists of color just starting their careers. Since its inception in 2019, the PF Studios program has grown from one initial studio space (Studio 400) to six studio spaces, and from nine artists in residence to over 25 artists participating in the program.

An annual showcase exhibition celebrates the evolving practices of the PF Studios community of artists. This year’s exhibition will be curated by Cameron Patricia Downey.

Participating artists: Alexandra Beaumont, Ashley Koudou, Arnée Martin, BakiBakiBaki Porter, Delaney Keshena, Elyse Lodermeier, Genie Hien Tran, Godfree Manley-Spain, Hibaaq Ibrahim, Jelani Ellis, Leeya Rose Jackson, Leon Valencia Currie, Maiya Lea Hartman, Margaret Vergara, Nailah Taman, Noi, nouf saleh, Silent Fox, and Venus X.

Gallery Hours: Thurs - Sat 12pm-6pm

Curatorial Statement:

This year’s PF studio program exhibition, In Other Miles, resides and ruptures from the junction of The Blues, repetition and departure to/from the end of the world.

Inspired by the curator’s own extended studies of George E. Lewis’s sonic and psyche-concerned essay Timeless Blues as well as Tyrone S. Palmer’s musings on affect and Blackness at the end of the world, this year’s PF Studios Exhibit whirls around the world’s end as both a political praxis and a necessity. This necessity being grounded in a Blues ethic-based exploration of how repetition, mourning and the romantic (see: the ultimate) get us to and through the end of an Anti-Black world. Surreality, song, train, and all those things quintessentially in and of the middle west meet at once.
