DEADLINE: PF studios off-site small group exhibition

Submit to be in the annual PF Studios off-site exhibition!

SUBMISSION FORM HERE: https://bit.ly/3VHsBgV

The 2024 show is being curated by Raye Cordes, Leslie Barlow, and Nailah Taman.
The show will be at Resource in S Minneapolis in August.

We encourage all current PF Studios artists and alumni to apply if the themes resonate with you and the work you are creating! Existing work AND ideas for the creation of new work are all accepted. Note: Participation in this exhibition is not required. And due to limited gallery space and desire to curate a cohesive show, there is a possibility that not all artists who apply will be included in this show.

Exhibition Theme

“The cognitive dissonance, the sense of unreality, has been palpable. we can only counter it through collective witnessing.” - Hala Alyan, Palestinian-American writer, poet, and clinical psychologist speaking about the genocide in Gaza, November 20th 2023

There is something palpable in the act of collective witnessing, especially in the times we find ourselves in; navigating multiple genocides, pandemics, and failures of the state. Witnessing is one of the endless acts of resistance that helps us strive toward a better world we are collectively building together. Hala states that  “Bearing witness is an act of community care”, and showing each other love through seeing/being seen, is how we will endure.

We are looking for work that affirms your/our humanity, the acceptance of your own complexity and the nuances, stories and shapes of those around you. The work that is submitted for this show may reflect the subtleties of resistance in daily life, or honor the act of witnessing and amplification, or illuminate the power and resilience that is achieved when we come together and see each other in our wholeness.

10's Talk with Studio Arisaema #144

Saturday, January 27, 2024

  • 6:00 PM 9:00 PM

  • Public Functionary1500 Jackson Street NE, #144Minneapolis, Mn 55413 (map)

As the Twin Cities’ creative ecosystem continues to expand, Queer and Trans artists are beginning to be recognized for their innovations in music and performance mediums. Yet Black Trans women in particular are under-resourced and under-platformed, while their cultural contributions have been taken out of context and exploited.

What would it look like to engage equitably with Black Trans women, beyond the consumption of their work? How can we sustain an arts ecosystem that acknowledges, compensates and values its most underrepresented members?

Join us at Public Functionary #144 on Saturday, January 27th from 6-9p for a conversation panel centering the experiences of local Black Trans women vocalists, performers, producers and engineers. Masks are strongly encouraged and will be provided, along with a catered meal.

Unable to attend in person? RSVP here to the Zoom livestream.

A portrait is both a statement and a mirror: a considered composition between participant and painter, and a reflection of ourselves (the viewer) in our particular place, headspace, and moment in time. This exchange of the gaze, a marking of time and a witnessing of one another, is one of the things that draws Leslie Barlow into her painting practice. In a unique joining of works, Leslie brings together videos and paintings from her 2021 museum exhibition Within, Between, and Beyond, with a new series of paintings created from visits and conversations with five Twin Cities based artists in 2023. While two distinct bodies of work, the throughlines of ancestral and familial bonds, identity creation and reformation, and the power of representation and reclamation of space through art and art making, can be felt throughout the exhibition.”

NKB Art Attack

NKB Art Attack

Art Attack is the annual Northrup King Building studio crawl, similar to Art-a-Whirl, but specific to just our studio building. So it's not as crowded/busy but still has a good flow of people throughout the weekend. The website reads: "The Northrup King Building's highly anticipated fall open studio event showcases four floors of amazing art and gifts that will attack all your senses – in a good way! Meet the artists, find a unique treasure, get your shopping done, or try your hand at an interactive art activity – all featured at our beautiful and historic arts building. Rawr, it's Art Attack!"

Why this is important for PF Studios -

Just like Art-a-Whirl, Art Attack will draw all types of folks, some of whom will be interested in seeing PF Studios, meeting you, seeing and/or purchasing your work. Participating in Art Attack is not a requirement of the PF Studios program, but we will gladly support you in promo if you decide to be open. Please speak with your studio mates about what day(s) of the weekend you might like to open your space! I've already heard from #285 that they will be participating, and if anyone being a part of it can respond to me, we will make sure to promote you on our social media that your studio will be open!! We will also have open hours for Smoke + Ground the entire weekend of Art Attack for more chances for folks to connect with your work!

Currents: A Juried Photography & Moving Image Exhibition

Thursday, November 9, 20236:00 PM
Sunday, November 12, 20235:00 PM

Exhibition opening: Thursday, November 9 | 6pm - 9pm

PF Main & Upstairs Gallery

Exhibit on view through Art Attack Weekend and Fall Open Studios

Friday, November 10th from 5-9pm

Saturday, November 11th from 12-8pm

Sunday, November 12th from 12-5pm

Like water in our bodies or the Mississippi River, the currents of nature, culture, and social justice flow through us to create a constantly changing shared ecosystem. Movement, in its myriad forms, is an inherent aspect of life and society. It speaks to the human experience's core dynamics, connecting us through shared actions, emotions, and narratives. From the simplicity of bodily motion to the profound implications of mass migration, the photographic works explore the significance of 'movement' in shaping our world and identities.

Each image in the exhibition reflects a facet of movement. They capture the hustle and bustle of city life, the journeys of immigrants, the people-led waves of social change, and the subtle shifts of emotional states. They trace the narratives of individuals swept up in the tide of global flux and political transformation.

We invite audiences to reflect on their own experiences of motion, change, and transition, fostering empathy and understanding through shared stories of motion. We move, we change, we adapt – and in these shared rhythms, we find connection and humanity.

Jurors: Drew Arrieta, Ryan Stopera & Rhianna Hajduch

CLOSING DAY - IN OTHER MILES (PF EXHIBITION)

CURATED BY CAMERON PATRICIA DOWNEY

OCT 14 - NOV 4 | PF MAIN GALLERY 144

Public Functionary’s PF Studios program supports emerging artists with affordable studio space, mentorship, workshops, and a community of practice. The program aimed to open access to the Northrup King Building, which has historically been inaccessible to artists of color just starting their careers. Since its inception in 2019, the PF Studios program has grown from one initial studio space (Studio 400) to six studio spaces, and from nine artists in residence to over 25 artists participating in the program.

An annual showcase exhibition celebrates the evolving practices of the PF Studios community of artists. This year’s exhibition will be curated by Cameron Patricia Downey.

Participating artists: Alexandra Beaumont, Ashley Koudou, Arnée Martin, BakiBakiBaki Porter, Delaney Keshena, Elyse Lodermeier, Genie Hien Tran, Godfree Manley-Spain, Hibaaq Ibrahim, Jelani Ellis, Leeya Rose Jackson, Leon Valencia Currie, Maiya Lea Hartman, Margaret Vergara, Nailah Taman, Noi, nouf saleh, Silent Fox, and Venus X.

Opening Reception: Saturday, Oct 14 | 6pm-10pm

Gallery Hours: Thurs - Sat 12pm-6pm

OCT 14 - Nov 4 | Main Gallery 144

Curatorial Statement:

This year’s PF studio program exhibition, In Other Miles, resides and ruptures from the junction of The Blues, repetition and departure to/from the end of the world.

Inspired by the curator’s own extended studies of George E. Lewis’s sonic and psyche-concerned essay Timeless Blues as well as Tyrone S. Palmer’s musings on affect and Blackness at the end of the world, this year’s PF Studios Exhibit whirls around the world’s end as both a political praxis and a necessity. This necessity being grounded in a Blues ethic-based exploration of how repetition, mourning and the romantic (see: the ultimate) get us to and through the end of an Anti-Black world. Surreality, song, train, and all those things quintessentially in and of the middle west meet at once.

ARTIST TALK - IN OTHER MILES (PF EXHIBITION)

OCT 14 - NOV 4 | PF MAIN GALLERY 144

In Other Miles: PF Studios Annual Exhibition // Artist Conversation: Thurs, Nov 2, 7pm

The conversation will feature four PF Studios artists and questions framed by guest curator, Cameron Patricia Downey.

About the artists:

Godfree Manley-Spain’s photo work includes portraiture, documentary and street, with themes of vulnerability, queer self-expression, movement and growth in community within vibrant settings.

Leeya Rose Jackson explores the intersections of identity, specifically Blackness, femininity, and queerness, with celestial and universal surrealism. She incorporates questions about Black Neurodivergence into her artwork after being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult.

With the body as site, Delaney Keshena (Menomini) uses hair, skin, and glass in their practice of crafting objects that relate stories of family, nation, and contemporary Indigenous experience.

Genie Hien Tran’s artistic practice often takes the form of collage, design, poetry and installation in order to explore the complexity of home, belonging and identity.

OPENING - Headbomb

Headbomb

New Work by Patricio De Lara

PF Upstairs Gallery 247

Oct 14 - Oct 28

Headbomb wanders between the paradoxical states of joy and fear, probing into a spectrum of fractured understanding and connection. Patricio De Lara employs distraction as an intentional artistic process to create aesthetically diverse paintings and drawings. His process encourages play across visual styles and mental meandering, trusting a puzzle piece will emerge from each pivot of neglected attention. This results in Post-it note drawings, canvases 6 feet tall, scratchy stream of consciousness drawings, narrative oil paintings, and portraits on dumpster cardboard.

The work draws from various source material, both personal and communal: YouTube comments, familial folklore, overheard phone calls, discarded thoughts, found photos, and memories. De Lara is intrigued by context switching and the ‘simulacrum’, something which replaces reality with its own false representation. Headbomb confronts our relationship with images that mold our perception and prompt us to probe into the absurd world around us.

Artist Bio:

Patricio De Lara is a Mexican-American painter and graphic designer by trade. He has been a Public Functionary studio artist and designer since 2019. Although a lifelong draftsman, he taught himself how to paint through “YouTube University”, with a trial-and-error curriculum on oil and acrylic paint. His binational upbringing at the dawn of the internet has influenced the shape of his work, exploring the space between ideas that usually leads to a bewildering picture of the world. He prefers to station himself in the strange, humorous, and often grotesque areas of life in hopes of catching a glimpse into the beauty that rears its head when you engage long enough. De Lara believes in being unsure and confused by your creations, as it is the most intoxicating form of self-discovery.

Opening Reception: Saturday, Oct 14 | 6pm-10pm

Gallery Hours: Thurs - Sat 12pm-6pm

OCT 14 - Oct 28 | Upstairs Gallery 247
